Description:

Important American Classical Parcel Gilt, Egyptian Marble, and Carved Mahogany Pier Table, c. 1830, probably J. and J.W. Meeks, New York, columns stamped "B.Hamot", marble top, plain frieze, Corinthian columns, mirror back flanked by marble pilasters, incurvate plinth, acanthus scrolled feet, h. 38 1/4 in., w. 44 1/2 in., d. 18 1/4 in. Provenance: Historic "Sally Mill", Middleburg, VA. Note: This large pier table exhibits a skirt, marble columns and pilasters, plinth and carvings indicative of the best examples from the Meeks firm. Of note are the incised “B.Hamot” stamps discovered on the carved capitals of this table. Capitals identical to those here are well known on cases from the Meeks firm, including those on the secretary (acc. 60.29.1) in the Metropolitan Museum of Art on two pier tables, one at the Museum of the City of New York, the other exhibited at the MET in 1970.
