Description:

Fine American Carved Mahogany Sarcophagus-Form Cellarette, early 19th c., probably Duncan Phyfe, New York, fitted interior accommodating 6 bottles, reeded plinth with urn finials, acanthus carved hairy paw feet, casters, h. 23 1/2 in., w. 27 1/2 in., d. 21 1/2 in. Note: The sarcophagus-form top, construction techniques, the acanthus-carved paw feet, and distinctive fine grain patterns on this cellarette closely relate to one made by New York cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe for his own residence, now in the collection of the Museum of the City of New York. The cellarette was a sophisticated furniture form among the growing American wealthy class at the beginning of the 19th century. It came equipped with casters to allow portability and was typically ordered with divisions to accommodate either four or six glass bottles. Ref.: Peter M. Kenny and Michael K. Brown.
