Description:

American Classical Bronze-Mounted and Carved Mahogany Secrétaire à Abattant, early 19th c., Philadelphia, pedimented cornice with egg and dart molding over a drawer, frieze of bolection drawers, fall-front door opens to a fitted interior, lower cabinet doors open to a shelf interior with four small drawers, columnar stiles, acanthine paw feet, h. 76 1/2 in., w. 38 in., d. 23 in. Provenance: The Stanley Weiss Collection, Providence, RI. Note: The elegantly proportioned sécrétaire à abattant shown here is closely related to a distinctive group of Philadelphia desk forms, each surmounted by a small rectangular box and a sloped top. These desks, often attributed to the workshop of Anthony G. Quervelle, also commonly feature columnar stiles and paw feet, as seen on a similar example held in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. For a discussion on this group of secretaries, see Robert C. Smith, “The Furniture of Anthony G. Quervelle,” The Magazine Antiques, January 1974 and Allison Boor, et. al., Philadelphia Empire Furniture, 2006 (present lot illustrated on p. 447). Note: The bronze mounts on the columns are in the reverse location and orientation in the catalogue photo. This has been corrected.
