American Carved Mahogany Tester Bed, early-to-mid 19th c., attr. to William McCracken, New Orleans, beaded tester, faceted tapered posts, beaded oval paneled headboard, shaped acanthus carved rails and foot board, h. 115 1/2 in., l. 79 1/2 in., w. 71 1/2 in. Provenance: Minor-Surget Family, Oakland, Natchez, MS; Estate of Mina Anne Graning Stowers, the Banker's House, Natchez, MS. Note: The distinctive headboard, rails, posts and tester on this bed are nearly identical to those on four known tester beds attributed to William McCracken (New Orleans/Baltimore 1808-1872): One in the Parsonage, Natchez, MS; one from Shadows on the Teche, New Iberia, LA (Neal Auction Company lot 497, Feb. 6, 1988); lot 574 sold by Neal Auction Company, Nov. 13, 1988; and lot 820, sold April 18, 2009. William McCracken with his brothers John and James established a substantial furniture trade on Royal Street from about 1830 to 1872. Like fellow New Orleans purveyors Prudent Mallard and François Seignouret, The McCrackens produced and sold their own goods such as the bed seen here, and retailed imported furniture from the Northeast and Cincinnati.
