An American Classical Carved Mahogany Writing Table and Bookcase, c. 1835, Baltimore, flared cornice over glazed doors enclosing shelves, superstructure of drawers atop central fitted escritoire drawer, a small drawer to each side, Ionic columnar supports, incurvate stretcher shelf, turned feet, height 89 1/2 in., width 49 1/2 in., depth 25 in. Provenance: Once part of the furnishings for Brookside, Orwell, VT. Illustrated: Gallenkemp. "Living with Antiques", The Magazine Antiques, June 1979, p. 1283, Pl. V. Note: The partial label bears the address "225 Saratoga St./ Baltimore, MD ". Note: The anthemion mullions, shallow case, faceted drawer, and columnar supports on this lot are nearly identical to those on a known mahogany writing table and bookcase signed A. Jenkins and exhibited by the Maryland Historical Society in 1993 and sold in these salesrooms as lot 395 on December 6, 2003. Many Baltimore cabinetmakers, especially those specializing in piano cases, are listed with Saratoga Street workshops in Baltimore City Directories of the 1820s and 1830s, as the partial label on this cabinet indicates.
