Description:

American Rococo Carved Rosewood Center Table, mid-19th c., probably John Henry Belter, New York, turtle top, conforming apron with carved scrolls, fruit-carved cabriole legs, shaped stretcher centered with a fruit-filled basket, h. 29 1/4 in., w. 47 1/2 in., d. 30 3/4 in. Provenance: Estates of Alfred and Emily Wolfson, Murray, KY. Note: Several design elements of the table shown here relate to the well-known group of tables made by John Henry Belter, in the pattern referred to as “Rosalie.” This table’s molded apron, foliate carving, and the density of the carved fruit decoration are comparable to similar features of a “Rosalie” example cited by Eileen and Richard Dubrow in American Furniture of the Nineteenth Century: 1840-1880.
