Description:

An American Rococo Carved Rosewood Library Table, mid-19th c., attributed to Alexander Roux, New York, top with gadrooned edge, frieze drawers, trestle base, barley-twist supports, casters, height 30 in., width 48 in., depth 25 1/2 in Note: An identical rosewood library table bearing the stenciled label of Alexander Roux sold in these salesrooms on October 6, 2007, lot 101. On the basis of the address included in that label, each table can be dated between 1838 and 1848, when Roux's shop was located at 478 Broadway. The spiral-turned legs and medial stretcher as well as the side stretchers carved with scrolls centering leaves derive from the Elizabethan Revival, a style mastered by Roux as evidenced by a number of sophisticated labeled pieces from his workshop.
