An American Gothic Painted Cast Iron Pedestal Wardian Case, c. 1850, attributed to J.W. Fiske, New York, octagonal Gothic iron frame with glazed panels, tracery decorated baluster stem on a spreading pierced base, height 36 in., width 18 in Note: The Wardian case was invented in 1829 by Dr. Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, whose collection of ferns was being poisoned by London's pollution. They were quickly adopted by plant explorers who were prospecting the world for new plants. By mid century handsome examples of the Wardian case were found in stylish drawing rooms.
