Description:

Cecily Brown
British/United States, b. 1969
"Untitled"
monotype on lanaquarelle paper mounted to board
2007, pencil-signed, dated, inscribed "Two Palms, NY" and "CB1179" en verso, "McClain Gallery, Houston, TX" label with artist, title and date, "Two Palms, New York, NY" printer label with artist, title and date and "Hand Made Frames, Brooklyn, NY" label on backing board, framed.

Note: Cecily Brown was born in London and attended the Slade School of Fine Art, receiving a BFA in painting before relocating to New York where she currently lives and is represented by the Gagosian Gallery. She employs oil paint as her primary material and explores themes of sexuality and eroticism from a feminine perspective, often through exaggerated and satirical approaches. Her creative practice blends abstraction with the figurative, frequently in large scale, and she has been making monotypes and etchings at Two Palms since 2002.

In Brown's "Untitled" monotype offered here, her dynamic brushwork maneuvers combinations of thinned-down gossamer and husky densities of paint. Brown's characteristic exploded figuration is immediately recognizable in this earthy color story and strategically balanced by spaces left intentionally unfilled.

Cecily Brown's work resides in institutional collections at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Tate Gallery in London, Hirshhorn Museum, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Brooklyn Museum, Glenstone Museum, Georgia Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where her major survey show, "Cecily Brown: Death and the Maid" appeared in 2023.
