Description:

Charles Cobelle (French/American, 1902-1999), "Parisian Park with a Fountain", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 20 in. x 24 in., framed.

  • Notes: Note: Born Carl Edleman in Alsace-Lorraine, Cobelle attended the University of Munich and l'École des Beaux Arts in Paris. He later studied privately with Marc Chagall and apprenticed at the studio of Raoul Dufy. It was at this time that Cobelle's distinctive style began to emerge. He employed a palette of bright, clear colors combined with a loose, yet bold line to create vibrant images of his beloved Paris. Even after he moved to the U.S. in the early 1930's (where he eventually became a citizen), Cobelle continued to paint images of Paris. A financially savvy businessman, Cobelle created advertising illustrations for French products aimed at the American audience, allowed his designs to be replicated on pottery, and created murals for a variety of public buildings.
