Charles Colson (French b. 1810, active New Orleans 1837), Portraits of Elegant Man and Woman, oils on canvas, signed, dated and inscribed Narbonne 1859, each 79 in. x 50 in., unframed E8000/12000 Note: The French trained academic painter, Charles Colson, spent the winter of 1837 in New Orleans. Colson had a particularly elegant style of portraiture that reflected the affluence and lifestyle of the sitters. Colson's fine draftsmanship is apparent in these portraits of the man and woman, particularly in his rich textures of dress and jewelry. Two examples of Colson New Orleans portraits include A Creole Lady and Mr Carti is in the collection of Louisiana State Museum.
