Charles Giroux (b. France c. 1828, active New Orleans 1868-1885), "Bayou Teche Landscape with River Settlement and Steamboat", oil on canvas, signed lower right, partial Seebold label en verso, original carved gilt frame, 14in. x 22in. E40000-60000 Provenance: Descended in the Palfrey family of Franklin, Louisiana. Acquired by Mr. Henry Palfrey 1858-1954), passed to His daughter Myrtle Palfrey Brumby, then to her daughter Dorothy Brumby Perkinson. Note: The following quote regarding Giroux's work seems very appropriate to the painting offered here. "At Blessing's, on Canal Street, are several paintings that possess merit of a high order. In the window are three landscapes by C Giroux scenes on the Teche, that in some respects are very superior. The pictures are painted from nature; the perspectives good, the scenes life-like and the tints so carefully chosen and so skillfully combined that they approach perfection in art. The key-note of all is refinement, each having a certain collective harmony that impresses the spectator with the cunning power of the artist. ...In all three, the tranquil waters of the Teche, in shadow and sunshine, are splendidly copied...' Mr. Stamford, "Pictures in New Orleans/Some of our Artist's Work,' Times- Democrat, July 17, 1883, p. 2, c. 4
