Lot 348
Charles Henri Joseph Leickert (Belgium, 1818-1908), "Summer Landscape", oil on board, signed lower left, with paper dealer's label en verso "Droosten, Allan, & Co.,... London", 7 in. x 9.75in. E4000/6000 Note: Charles Leickert is considered one of the best artists of 19th century Dutch Romanticism. Along with artists like Adrianus Eversen (Dutch, 1818-1897) and Willem Koekkoek (Dutch, 1816- 1870), Leickert did not aim for an accurate visual representation of the Dutch landscape. Rather he tried to render an idealized version of a world that already in Leickert's time seemed to be rapidly disappearing. In the 1840's and 1850's this "Golden Age" version of The Netherlands became very popular. His numerous winter landscapes with the charming skating scenes are what he seems to be best known for, but his summer landscapes are equally skillful evocations of a tranquil vision of the Dutch rural land.
