Description:

Charles Richards (American/Louisiana, 1906-1992), "Horse and Buggy at the French Market", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 20 in. x 24 in., unframed. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: New Orleans artist Charles Richards held three one-man shows at the Isaac Delgado Museum (now the New Orleans Museum of Art) in the mid-1940s. He also won first prize in another of their exhibitions during this period. Richards painted a wide range of subject matter including portraits, landscapes, still lifes, figure studies and French Quarter street scenes. The latter are some of his best artistic output. The painting offered here depicts a nocturnal view of the French Market, glowing from within, a horse and buggy in the foreground. Richards employed an impressionist style with soft brushwork, which creates a romantic effect in this charming scene.
