Charles Richards (American/New Orleans, 1906-1992), "New Orleans Street Scene", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 13in. x 17in. E800- 1200 Provenance: Estate of Al Rose, New Orleans. Note: Famed New Orleans author, artist and jazz historian, Al Rose left an indelible impression on the history of jazz and New Orleans. Beginning in 1946, Rose hosted for decades the syndicated radio show Journey Into Jazz. Rose wrote numerous noteworthy books including Storyville, New Orleans Being an Authentic, Illustrated Account of the Notorious Red-Light District, I Remember Jazz: Six Decades Among the Great Jazzmen, Eubie Blake, New Orleans Jazz: A Family Album co-written with Edmond "Doc" Souchon, and Born in New Orleans: Notables of Two Centuries. He also enjoyed a successful career as a caricaturist both under his own name and pseudonyms. An extensive selection of Al Rose's collection of records, sheet music and assorted ephemera is now part of the Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University.
