Chief Phillip LeRoy Willey (American-New Orleans, 1887-1980), 'Yellow Dog', oil on board, signed lower right, 5 in. x 7 in. E400-600 Note: Prior to moving to New Orleans in 1932, Willey traveled the country and worked a variety of jobs including deckhand on a steamboat, fireman, lumberman and wagon driver for the Barnum and Bailey Circus. For over thirty years, Willey worked for the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board, eventually becoming chief police officer for the board, hence the nickname 'Chief.' Upon retiring in 1966, Willey took up painting and became one of artists who exhibited and sold paintings on Jackson Square in the French Quarter As a self-taught artist, Willey incorporated fantasy figures and animals into his delightful landscapes.
