Lot 734
A Large and Fine Chinese Carved Zitan Brush Pot, Bitong, probably 1915, naturalistic hollowed tree trunk form, deeply carved to the front with the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove depicted at leisurely pursuits: playing go, making music, and drinking wine amid the rocks and trees of a bamboo grove, the back side carved in knotty and gnarled naturalistic form, inscribed "made in early 1915 (or 1975)" and sealed, height 9 1/4 in., width 8 1/8 in Provenance: Aixinjueluo Collection. Note: The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove were a group of recluses said to be scholars, statesmen and officials who turned their backs on traditional careers in order to spend their lives pursing their own leisurely interests. They occasionally gathered together in a so-called bamboo grove or grotto to listen to music, drink wine, play games, and discuss art and literature. The most famous of the Seven Sages is Liu Ling, who was immortalized by his famous essay on wine drinking. In the present lot, Liu Ling is depicted in the lower left corner of the carved scene resting upon an overturned vessel from which flows a steady stream of wine.
