A Chinese Brass Mounted Carved Jichimu Horseshoe Back Folding Armchair, Jiaoyi, probably Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), curving crest rail with down-swept arms terminating in scroll hand rests supported on the gracefully curved extensions of the front legs, the serpentine splat with three pierced panels, the central register carved with a qilin amid clouds and lingzhi, X-form hinged legs ending in platform stretchers, woven seat, sheet brass mounts throughout, height 41 3/4 in., width 27 in Provenance: Aixinjueluo Collection. Note: In Chinese Domestic Furniture in Photographs and Measured Drawings, Gustav Ecke calls Jichimu (also known as chicken wing wood) "by far the most masculine of all hardwoods utilised by the Chinese cabinet-maker." Ecke further writes: "In intrinsic strength it is superior to the oak of Gothic and Renaissance furniture."
