Description:

A Chinese Polychromed and Gessoed Carved Wood Figure of a Luohan, probably Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the bald standing figure wearing long robes and holding both hands in anjali mudra at his chest, height 14 3/4 in Provenance: With Benjamin Franklin March, Jr. (1899-1934), Curator of Asiatic Art, Detroit Institute of Arts (1927-1931); thence by descent in his family. Note: The figure appears to retain the original layer of gesso-paint decoration over linen which subsequently has been painted over with a gilt varnish.
