Note: Sold to benefit the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Note: Chris Doyle is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Boston College in 1981 and his Master of Architecture from Harvard University in 1985. His work ranges from large-scale public installations to crude stop-motion animation to starkly vivid and intricate watercolor paintings. Throughout his career, Doyle focuses on humanity’s relationship to the natural world with his work reflecting themes of “the tension between the individual and the group in a culture fiercely devoted to progress.” The painting offered today is reminiscent of his 2012 series of watercolors “The Savage State” in which he reinterprets Thomas Cole’s “The Course of Empire” (1833-1836), illustrating the forest floor and the trees overhead through fractured geometry. This depiction of the angelic child as “the prophet” with the group of children listening intently remarks upon the reality that the next generation must confront what the previous one has overlooked, especially when considering humans’ relationship with the earth. Doyle’s characteristic sharp lines and shapes contrast with the hazy glow of the prophet figure. The stark off-center angle of negative space cuts into the canopy of trees above, adding compositional dynamism and a visual thread to his other works.
