Argente and Gilt Bronze Presentation Kylix, Paris, c. 1875, after the Hildesheim Treasure "Minerva Bowl", reverse inscribed "TRESOR D'HILDESHEIM/ FAC-SIMILE GALVANIQUE/ CHRISTOFLE & CIE", h. 3 in., w. 12 1/2 in. Note: The Hildesheim Treasure, a trove of approximately seventy pieces of Roman silver, was discovered in 1868 in Hildesheim, Germany by Prussian soldiers. The “Minerva Bowl” is considered one of the finest of the objects. Electrotype copies of the various objects were made for museum collections; the best of these were made by Christofle & Cie. The Hildesheim Treasure is now housed in the Altes Museum, Berlin, although the Minerva Bowl was lost in 1945.
