Circle of Jacob Isaacsz van Ruisdael (Dutch, 1628/29-1682), "Wooded Landscape on a Rocky Hill with a Waterfall", oil on panel, monogrammed "JVR" lower left, 13 in. x 14.75in. E5000/7000 Provenance Taylor Clark Galleries, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1965. Note: Jacob van Ruisdael was one of the most innovative and talented Dutch landscape painters of the second half of the 17th century. His naturalistic compositions and unique ability to transfer the power of nature to canvas constituted a transition from the tonal landscapes of Jan van Goyen, Salomon van Ruisdael and Cornelis Vroom. Jacob van Ruisdael was a varied painter of the landscape, producing mountainous, river and wooded settings, seascapes, beach and dune scenes, winter and panoramic views. The work offered here, Wooded Landscape on a Rocky Hill with a Waterfall, is based upon a composition painted in the early 1650s which is catalogue entry no. 245 in Seymour Slive's recently published catalogue raison‚e of the artist. Ruisdael painted large numbers of waterfalls, sometimes with little variation, and they form the largest single category within his oeuvre.
