Description:
Circle of Nicolas Largillière (French, 1656-1746), "Portrait of Armand-Gaston-Maximilien, Cardinal de Rohan-Soubise", 18th c., oil on canvas, 50 1/4 in. x 38 1/2 in., in a later gilt, gessoed, and carved wood frame.
- Notes: Note: This Baroque portrait depicts Armand-Gaston-Maximilien, prince de Rohan-Soubise, who was made Bishop of Strasbourg in 1704 and Cardinal of Strasbourg in 1712. Cardinal de Rohan-Soubise came from a long line of nobility, including his father, the Comte de Rochefort and the first Prince de Soubise, his grandfather, the Duc de Montbazon and the Prince de Guéméné, and his great-grandfather, the Duc de Sully. He was also the uncle of Cardinals Armand de Rohan-Soubise-Ventadour and Louis-César-Constantin de Rohan-Guéméné-Montbazon, and the great-uncle of Cardinal Louis-René-Edouard de Rohan-Guéméné, all of whom succeeded him as Bishop of Strasbourg. In this portrait, as in those by Hyacinth Rigaud (1659-1743) and Pierre Drevet (1663-1738), Cardinal de Rohan-Soubise wears the red silk and white fur winter cappa magna of the Catholic Church, along with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit. The handling of the different textures such as fur, lace, and silk in this portrait calls to mind the brushwork in the paintings of Nicolas de Largillière. Similarly, the gestures of Cardinal de Rohan-Soubise's hands greatly resemble those of de Largillière in his renowned "Study of Hands," now at the Musée du Louvre.
