[Civil War Cased Images] A Cased Ambrotype of Isabelle Buchanon Edmondson (1840-1873), celebrated Confederate spy and smuggler, sixth plate, in an embossed leather case with brass mat and velvet lining, separated at hinges. E1500-2000 Note: When Union troops occupied Memphis in 1862, the city became a vast supply depot and Miss Edmondson began passing information and smuggled supplies to the Confederates. She kept a diary chronicling her efforts. Her diary entry of March 16, 1864 reads in part: "at one o'clock Mrs. Facklen, Mrs. Kirk and I began to fix my articles for smuggling, we made a balmoral of the grey cloth for uniform, pin'd the hats to the inside of my hoops - tied the boots with a strong list, letting them fall directly in front, the cloth having monopolized the back and the hats the side - all my letters, brass buttons, money &c in my bosom..."
