Civil War, Louisiana Defenses-preparedness An important early Louisiana Civil War document, being an Intelligence Report- manuscript of a Description of Forts Berwick and Cherne, Louisiana. An incomplete report addressed to an unknown General following a reconnaissance by an unknown officer. A four page manuscript description of Forts Berwick and Cherne in the bayous of Louisiana Bayous LaFourche and Wax-Atchafalaya River . Dated "Head Quarters, 1stDiv. La V.T., New Orleans, 12 Sept. 1861", it offers an early view of Louisiana in the war years including the breakdown of men and armaments at each location. This inspection was necessary to the preparation for the inevitable Union invasion and the report raised some certainly disturbing problems for the Pelican State, including, "The companies comprising the garrisons of Fort Berwick and Cherne, they are infantry, some of whom especially in Fort Berwick, are but imperfectly acquainted with the musket exercise, while all both officers and men , are entirely ignorant of the management of heavy artillery..." A cause for caution as the forts would provide the only defense against the Union onslaught of April, 1862, that would cause the eventual Fall of New Orleans.
