Lot 903
Civil War - Madisonville, Louisiana 2 interesting local A.L.S. from Mr. Hand to Mr. J.M. Lymans. The first dated Aug. 6th, 1862 relates that "... the Yankees are so bold and thievish that we feel very uneasy to get away all of our negroes we can and in a hurry...We had a visit from Yankee soldiers, 400 men and 4 cannon, they stole from us clothing and tools etc..." The second dated May 8th, 1864 thanks them for news of their son George, speaks of hard times in Madisonville including an attack by 2 large gun boats and of the Confederate Sharpshooters who came to prevent the mill from falling into enemy hands. Mentions Kirby Smith and Magruder and the fact that the Yankees have taken off all the blacks.
