[CIVIL WAR, UNION] Major General Benjamin "Beast" Butler (1818-1893).A.D.S. A two page letter in a secretarial hand and signed by Butler to U.S. Senator, Henry Bowen Anthony of Rhode Island (1815-1884), requesting the Senator's assistance in having the Secretary of War appoint Captain Lawrence to a regiment serving with Butler. "...I can then put him on duty where he will be of service to the country..." The letter is written from Fortress Monroe on November 15th, 1863 and is written on the stationery of Headquarters 18th Army Corps, Department of Virginia and North Carolina.
