Description:

Clarence Millet, A.N.A. (American/Louisiana, 1897-1959), "Oak Alley Plantation, Vacherie", oil on canvas, signed lower left, pencil-titled en verso, 22 in. x 26 in., framed. Provenance: Acquired from the artist; thence by descent in a New Orleans and Lake Charles, LA family. Note: Oak Alley Plantation near Vacherie is one of the most iconic plantations in Louisiana. Known for its impressive tree canopied allé leading to the Doric columned façade, the plantation was built in 1836 and completed in 1939. Jacques Telesphore Roman III obtained the property from his brother-in-law Valcour Aime in 1836. Impressed by the dramatic overarching trees, he demolished the modest house at the end of the allé and replaced it with a majestic Greek Revival structure. He originally named it Bon Sejour, meaning “good stay” in French, but the nickname Oak Alley, given to it by travelers on the Mississippi steamers, eventually took hold. There are 28 columns on the plantation mirroring the 28 oak trees lining the path. In the painting by Clarence Millet offered here, Oak Alley Plantation stands impressive amongst the lush greenery of the garden, while three antebellum ladies congregate in the shadows of an oak tree.
