Description:

Clarence Millet, A.N.A. (American/Louisiana, 1897-1959), "French Quarter Garden", oil on canvas board, signed lower right, signed and titled on backing paper en verso, 15 in. x 18 in., original frame. Provenance: Doris Crary Bennett, New Orleans; thence by descent. Note: Clarence Millet returned to New Orleans in 1924 after completing studies at the Art Students’ League in New York. His favored subject during this time was the distinctive buildings and life of the French Quarter. In this vividly colored painting, Millet depicts a verdant courtyard with two young girls in the foreground. The distinctive architecture of the Vieux Carré lies beyond the garden wall, with the spires of St. Louis Cathedral visible in the background. As is found in Millet’s best paintings, there is an atmospheric quality to his rendering of light and shadow and a sense of the breeze moving through the trees.
