Clarence Millet, A.N.A. (American-New Orleans, 1895-1959), Patio of the Court of Two Sisters Restaurant, c. 1945, oil on canvas, signed lower right, 32 .5in. . x 40 in., in a period frame. E20000-30000 Note: Clarence Millet specialized in painting scenes of the French Quarter, where he had a studio. Millet was an active and respected member of the many local art clubs and is the only New Orleans artist to have the prestigious honor of being admitted into the National Academy of Design. The A.N.A. designation after the artist's signature on this painting indicates that it was painted after his admittance to the National Academy in 1943, and likely dates to the mid-1940s. This exceptionally large composition by Millet captures a quintessential scene of New Orleanians enjoying brunch at the Court of Two Sisters. Located at 613 Royal Street, the Court of Two Sisters was so named for Emma and Bertha Camors, born in 1858 and 1860 respectively, who owned a notions shop on the site. In the 1940s and 50s, the restaurant was a popular place for locals to dine. Two other scenes of the patio by Millet are known and are in the collections of Louisiana State University and The Historic New Orleans Collection. Each of these is much smaller than the work offered here and presents a different view of the patio.
