Description:

Clarence Millet, A.N.A. (American/New Orleans, 1897-1959), "Cathedral Jackson Square", oil on canvas, signed lower left, signed and titled en verso, 24 in. x 26 in., in the original molded silver gilt frame. E20000/30000 Note: In this painting, Clarence Millet beautifully captured the atmosphere and activities of Jackson Square on an early Sunday morning in the 1940s. As a group of churchgoers gather at the front door of St. Louis Cathedral on their way to mass, Jackson Square has come alive with visitors, street vendors and residents of the Vieux Carre. In the background, there are no traces of the skyscrapers that would become part of the skyline in the latter part of the twentieth century. This wonderful painting with its unique perspective is a rare view of this historic place.
