Description:

Six American Classical Mahogany "Gondola" Dining Chairs, c. 1830, New York, molded crest rail, vasiform splat, incurvate seat rail, cabriole legs, h. 33 in., w. 18 1/2 in., d. 20 1/2 in.; accompanied by a copy of a Didier Inc. receipt and appraisal. Provenance: Didier Inc., New Orleans, LA., 1993. Note: Derived from the ancient Greek klismos chair form, the elegant form of the “gondola” chair was revived in the Napoleonic and Louis Philippe eras and transmitted from France to the United States by high-style makers like Duncan Phyfe. By the Late Classical period, New York makers such as Joseph Meeks added stylized features to the gondola chair, such as those seen on the chairs in this lot, including the shaped crest rail and the vasiform splat.
