Description:

Claudia DeMonte (American/New York, b. 1947), "Claudia in a Frenzy", 1987, acrylic on paper pulp, unsigned, 21 in. x 25 in. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: Bronx-born Claudia DeMonte is an unabashed feminist artist who is known for exploring the iconography of femininity in all its forms. Many of her works are self-referential, as is evidenced in the piece presented here. "Claudia in a Frenzy" depicts the artist as a mythical larger-than-life figure. Goddess-like and otherworldly, her body morphs into an impossible shape. Decorated with her signature bright colors and vibrant detailing, the figure is both powerful and delicate, a play on the expectation versus reality of modern-day women. As Alicia Faxon writes for Art New England, "Her inspiration comes from many sources: antique sculpture, pop art, body art, and feminism, but her voice is distinctively her own, challenging our perceptions and presuppositions of both art and women."
