Description:

Clementine Hunter (American/Louisiana, 1886-1988), "Melrose Plantation", c. 1960, cotton stitched quilt with brown paper backing, monogrammed lower right, inscribed in ink en verso, 27 1/2 in. x 36 in.

  • Notes: Note: Quilting was Clementine Hunter's earliest method of expressing her creativity. She created quilt tops and wall-hangings, the most impressive of which depict the buildings and people of Melrose Plantation. As in other documented Hunter textiles, the piece offered here features "The Big House" of Melrose. It is sewn with symmetry and balance of design, hallmarks of Hunter's quilts. Her large textiles are difficult to find but represent some of her best work.
