Description:

Clementine Hunter (American/Louisiana, 1886-1988), "Pecan Pickin'", c. 1955, oil on canvas board, initialed lower right, 18 in. x 24 in., framed. Provenance: Estate of Charles and Elaine Pyle, Pauls Valley, OK; acquired from François Mignon Note: The Pyles were pecan brokers, who visited Melrose Plantation and had a close relationship with Clementine Hunter. According to family history, the Pyles specially commissioned this painting from the artist. While other Hunter paintings incorporate numerous views and activities around Melrose, this painting is unique in that its composition combines pecan picking with chickens and African-American architecture.
