Description:

Clementine Hunter (American/Louisiana, 1886-1988), "They're Camped Out on the River in Tents", oil on paper, signed "Clemence" lower right, monogrammed upper right, c. 1945-50, 12 in. x 15 in., matted and framed.

  • Notes: Note: This rare early work by Hunter is signed "Clemence", the French version of the artist's first name. In an anecdote relayed by Hunter in an interview with John McCurnin, she stated that, with her authorization, James Register had signed her early works with the name "Clemence" for her, as she was illiterate. Later, her friend Francois Mignon taught her to write her initials, which Hunter most likely added to the painting herself. References: Gilley, Shelby R.
