  • Provenance: Provenance: Descended in the family of the artist.~ Note: Born in Hadley, Indiana, Clifton Wheeler attended the John Herron Art Institute, Columbia University and Butler University. The artist's classmates included Wayman Adams, Rockwell Kent, Edward Hopper, and George Bellows. Wheeler received instruction from painters such as William Forsyth, William M. Chase, and Robert Henri. He also studied in Europe where he met Hilah Drake, who would become his wife after their return to the United States. Wheeler was one of two artists selected to represent Indiana at the World's Fairs in New York and San Francisco. He also exhibited at the Hoosier Salon and assisted in painting murals in the Indianapolis General Hospital children's ward.
