[COFFIN HANDBILL, An account of some of the Bloody Deeds of General Jackson, broadside, ink on paper, deckle edges, 1828, 25 1/4 in. x 16 in. Note: Losses in upper corners. E1200-1800 Note: This broadside is evidence of one of the most contentious presidential elections ever - the 1828 contest between Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams. In what became known as "Coffin Handbills", Adams' supporters published broadsides outlining a series of "bloody deeds" committed by General Jackson in the years 1814-1815. The most prominent of these was Jackson's order in December 1815 to execute six Tennessee militia soldiers charged with desertion. Six black coffins representing the men dominate the broadside which was also bordered in black for effect Other executions are described along with the attack of an Indian village on the Tallapousie River led by Jackson in 1814. The back of the broadside records court proceedings for each of the condemned men.
