Snellenburg & Co., Inc, Philadelphia label en verso, sight 16.5in. x 14.25in. E7000/10000 Note: Born in Philadelphia, the prominent American artist, Colin Campbell Cooper studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins and in Europe at the Academie Julian. Scenic vistas of architecture and street scenes became Cooper's specialty. He was an instructor of watercolor in the 1890s at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia and then moved to New York City. With his artist wife Emma Lampert, he traveled extensively throughout Europe and America in constant search of new subject matters for their paintings. Like many notable artists in the early twentieth century, Cooper traveled to New Orleans. The historic architecture and quaint surroundings of the French Quarter became a source of inspiration for the artist. In this painting, "Tea Room, Exchange Alley," Cooper depicts three women huddled around a table having their tea leaves read in the quiet of the French Quarter alleyway.
