Description:

Colonial American Schoolgirl Needlework Sampler
signed Arrabella Shiphrd (or Shepherd), dated "Novem 23 Anno Don 1736", silk thread on linen, featuring alphabets and inscriptions in seven different fonts and an Old Testament Jeremiah 4:22 quote. Initials "G" and "R" appear above nine crowns. In Colonial America, "GR" referred to Georgius Rex (Latin for "George the King"). Symbols such as pears signify abundance, divine love, and motherhood. Across numerous cultures, six-petaled flowers or rosettes are associated with the flower of life, appearing for protection in homes and churches. Other iconography includes mushrooms, crosses, flowers, birds, lozenges; ten fields are separated by chains, zig-zags, ornate bands, and waves, and hearts – which signified the maker's inner virtue, love for family, or faith. Needlework samplers were considered a specimen of achievement for schoolgirls as part of their education in domestic skills, morality, and literacy. h. 17 7/8 in., w. 9 1/4 in., d. 7/8 in., framed
