[Confederate Cotton Transactions], manuscript letter, dated from the Executive office, Shreveport, LA, March 19th 1864, signed by Henry W. Allen, Governor of Louisiana, and J. Hardy, Assistant Secretary of State, appointing Squire B. Bell Esqr. an agent of the state and, in part, "having purchased of the said Bell One Hundred and thirty nine bales of cotton, he will accompany the same to Eagle Pass and there sell it for medicines for the use of the state..." and further, "the civil and military authorities of the State of Texas and of the confederacy are respectfully requested to lend their aid..."; together with a partially printed document dated May 16th, 1865, signed by the above mentioned, again appointing Squire B. Bell an agent for brokering cotton, and also with Squire Bell's 1874 voter registration document from Assumption Parish, noting Bell as a native of Kentucky and having the occupation of planter, 13 in. x 8 1/2 in., 12 1/2 in. x 10 in. and 10 3/4 in. x 8 1/2 in., respectively.
