Description:

Confederate First National Flag, c. 1861, silk, double-sided stars made from sequins and buillon, 21 1/4 in. x 40 in. Provenance: Gaspar Cusachs, entrepreneur, historian and collector, (1855-1929); The Gaspar Cusachs Collection, loaned to the Louisiana State Museum, New Orleans, LA (c. 1909-2016). Note: The Confederate First National Flag, also known as the “stars and bars flag,” was the first official flag of the Confederacy from 1861 until 1863. It was originally designed by the German artist Nicola Marschall, who emigrated to the United States in 1849 and resided in Alabama at the time of secession. The design was changed in 1863 due to its similarity to the U.S. flag, which caused confusion on the battlefield after the outbreak of the Civil War. The seven stars represent the original seven states of the Confederacy. Reference: http://www.usflag.org/confederate.stars.and.bars.html
