Lot 979
[Contract to Maintain the Bridges of New Orleans , 1795, a Spanish Colonial contract, five manuscript pages, stitched, dated at the Cabildo, New Orleans, September 18, 1795, signed between the master carpenter Robert Jones and Cabildo escribano Pedro Pedachaux (the escribano also served as a notary public, then a most prestigious post requiring a royal appointment). The document contracts Robert Jones to maintain the bridges in New Orleans for an annual fee of 800 pesatos. This contract may be one result of Governor Carondelet's 1795 directive to keep the bridges, levees and roads of New Orleans in good order, the toll drawbridge at Bayou St. John having proved a fine moneymaker for the city. Prominent Cabildo officials are referenced in the contract. Good condition, some bleed-through and a few minor paper textual losses.
