Description:

Crawford Gillis (Ameri-can/Alabama, 1914-2000), "Beach Boys Babylon", 1951, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, 26 x 36 in., in a period frame.

  • Provenance: Provenance : From the noted Southern Art collection of Steven Cabot Barnes Harvey (1949-1993). Note: Born near Selma, Alabama, Crawford Gillis enrolled at the National Academy of Design in 1935, where he studied with Leon Kroll and Charles Curran. While in New York City, he met Delphic Studios owner Alma Reed, who introduced him to the work of Mexican muralists and the Social Realism Movement, and encouraged him to return to the South to paint the familiar sights of his youth. Over the course of the next few years, Reed exhibited Gillis' Southern paintings at her Fifth Avenue gallery three times, each to critical acclaim. While in Alabama, Gillis joined the multi-disciplinary group of young artists in Montgomery, known as the New South. In 1939 he was given a one-man show whose content proved to be controversial and was the New South's closing exhibition. During World War II, Gillis served for four years in the military on the European front, where he earned a Bronze Star Medal. Upon returning home, Gillis resumed painting and exhibiting his work. The alluring "Beach Boys Babylon", painted in 1951, reflects the influences of both Cubism and Modernism in his work.
