Description:

Louisiana Creole-Style Mulberry Slat Back Low Chair, c. 1780-1820, elongated nipple-shaped finials, disk-turned stiles, arched and spurred slats, corn-shuck seat, disk-and-spool turned legs, double stretcher, tapered feet, h. 30 1/2 in., w. 16 1/4 in., d. 13 1/2 in. Note: The distinctive disk-shaped turnings, nipple-shaped finials, turned stretcher, and spurred-arched slats are nearly identical to one in the collection of Robert E. Smith, Breaux Bridge, LA and closely relate to other well-known Creole-style chairs, including one in the Sebastian Louis Kleinpeter Home, an example found in the Holden Family Collection, and another collected at Bayou Bend Collection in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (B.2007.27). The particularly low seat heights of these chairs, ranging from 10-12 inches, distinguish them from other Louisiana slat-back side chairs. The versatile low adult chair was used as steps for mounting high Louisiana beds, as prie-dieux, slipper chairs, or as stands for chamber pots. Ref.: Holden, Jack, et al. Furnishing Louisiana Creole and Acadian Furniture 1735-1835, pp. 292-294, figs. 3a, 4a, 7a.
