Disciples of Thespis, two ball admit cards, 1874, lithography by Wehrmann, Exchange Alley, New Orleans, (2 pcs.) Note: The April 24, 1874 "New Orleans Republican" newspaper reported that despite the problems of flooding in the city, the Disciples of Thespis carried on with their planned parade and ball; "So, last night at half-past eight o'clock, Thespis, the ancient but immortal, leaped into our midst, arrayed in costly robes as become a conquering Athenian, followed by a band of true and trusty disciples. To greet Thespis and his disciples, the populace had turned out in crowds with a surging mass of humanity...The pageant moved to the Varieties Theatre. The theatre was a parterre of beauty. The dress circle, parquette and second tier were all appropriated by ladies...After the tableau succeeded the ball, which was one of the finest that has ever been held in the Varieties Theatre. Its vied in splendor and magnificence with those of the Mystick Krewe and Twelfth Night Revellers. More we could not say were we to write a volume".
