Description:

Document Signed by Pierre-Clément de Laussat, Governor of Louisiana, dated from N. Orleans, 15th Nivose, year 12 (January 6, 1804), to the Commanding Officer of the Grande Garde, signed by Laussat, countersigned by his secretary D'Augerot, relating how he arrested the Commander of The Terror, who insulted him, 12 in. x 8 in., framed, in French, full text available.

  • Notes: Note: Pierre-Clément Laussat was the Governor of Louisiana for 20 days during the Louisiana Purchase. He assumed authority from the Spanish on November 30, 1803, and then transferred power to the U.S. after Jefferson bought Louisiana from Napoleon. Nivose, derived from the French word for "snowy" was one of the new calendar months created under Napoleon's reign. D'Augerot was the last name of Laussat's mother, indicating that this could be a younger family member acting as his secretary.
