Description:

Dorothy Alden Johnson Deyrup (American/New York, 1908-1961), "Sunbeams, Mobile, Alabama", oil on canvas, signed lower right, titled and labeled en verso, 23 in. x 38 in., in a period mahogany frame.

  • Notes: Note: American Social Realist painter Dorothy Deyrup studied with portrait artist Robert Hallowell in New York City early in her career. She was exposed to art through her parents, who were acquainted with painters Thomas Hart Benton and Edward Hopper, as well as Camilo Egas, Director of the Art Department at the New School for Social Research, where Deyrup¹s father worked. A talented artist, Deyrup worked with oils, watercolors, and woodcuts. She exhibited in solo shows at the Montross Gallery, New York City, in 1941; the Argent Gallery; the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, New York City, in 1944; and Wellons Gallery, New York City, in 1953. In addition to working in New York City and the Hudson River Valley, Deyrup also visited Florida and Mobile, Alabama, to paint the scenic landscapes. She was drawn to the beautiful Alabama landscape which inspired her to paint this atmospheric scene with hazy beams of sunlight through the trees.
