Dorothy Stanley Emmons (American, 1891-1960), "Balcony on South Battery, Charleston, South Carolina", 1926, oil on canvas affixed to board, signed lower left, pencil dated and artist label with title en verso, 9 in. x 11 in., framed Note: The painter, etcher, illustrator and author Dorothy Emmons was the daughter and life long companion of photographer Chansonetta Stanley Emmons of the Stanley Steamer Motor Carriage Company family. Emmons studied art at Wellesley College and in Ogunquit, Maine, with American Impressionist Charles Woodbury. In 1926, Dorothy and her mother traveled to Charleston, South Carolina. While Chansonetta took photographs of the rural communities of the Lowcountry, Dorothy painted this charming impressionistic view of the South Battery. Reference: Severens, Martha R.
