Description:

Dutch School, probably 18th c., in the manner of Jan van der Heyden ( Dutch, 1637-1712), "A Moated Castle and Its Gatehouse, with Peasant Figures and a Dog", oil on cradled panel, bearing strengthened inscription lower left "V. Heyden, f.", 12 3/8 in. x 16 7/8 in., in a gilt frame. E8000-12000 Note: While this charming picture follows the standard size and subject matter of typical paintings by the celebrated Dutch architectural view-painter Jan van der Heyden, its "signature" inscription appears to have been reworked (or added), probably after that artist's death. Its style, as well as the thin panel, suggest this work's creation in the 18th c., by a capable emulator of that master. A closely similar composition, in vertical format, sold at Sotheby's Colonnade on September 13, 1995, lot 535, as "Attributed to Jan van der Heyden."
